Bali travel guide
Oh My Bali! A Bucket List Dream Come True
Bali—just saying the name feels like a breath of fresh, tropical air. This magical island is the ultimate beach lover’s bucket list destination, and trust me, it lives up to the hype. From vibrant jungles to sacred temples and turquoise coastlines, Bali is a must-see and, more importantly, a must-experience.
I first touched down in Bali back in 2016 for a month-long Yoga Teacher Training at the iconic Yoga Barn in Ubud. Picture this: early morning meditations, soulful practices under thatched rooftops, and starlit nights filled with stillness and serenity. The Yoga Barn was more than a yoga studio—it was the heartbeat of a truly mystical journey. Even if a full retreat isn’t in your plans, I highly recommend dropping in for a class or checking out one of their unforgettable ecstatic dance nights. The sense of community here is something special—raw, connected, and beautifully Bali.
After completing my training, I spent another month island-hopping and soaking it all in. A few favorite spots? Canggu (for the cafes, surf, and sunsets), Seminyak (hello, stylish beach clubs), Uluwatu (cliffside magic and epic waves), the Gili Islands, and Nusa Lembongan—each with their own vibe and rhythm.
Getting to Bali
Most international travelers will fly into Ngurah Rai International Airport (DPS) in Denpasar. I flew via Hong Kong on Cathay Pacific, and the journey—though long—was smooth and scenic. Just a heads-up: this is no short haul. Be prepared for a very long flight and pack your patience (and your comfiest travel outfit!).
I’ve visited Bali in October, November, April, and June, and the weather has always been warm and tropical with occasional rainstorms. It’s part of the island’s charm! Pack light and breathable: think dresses, shorts, comfy all-weather shoes, a wide-brim hat, and don’t forget the SPF.
Travel Tips
Currency: The local currency is Indonesian Rupiah (IDR). Most cafes, shops, and hotels take credit cards, but make sure you bring a good travel card with no foreign transaction fees.
Cash is queen at local markets and smaller stalls, so withdraw some upon arrival.
Connectivity: Grab a local SIM card or a travel WiFi device to stay connected on the go.
Ready for the good stuff? Let’s dive into my top Bali recommendations!
Ubud
The spiritual and cultural heart of Bali.
Ubud Central Market – A treasure trove of handmade goods: straw purses, jewelry, dresses, toys, and more. Bring cash and prepare to bargain!
Maya Resort & Spa – Book a stay or grab a day pass. This is where I took most of my yellow flower bath photos! The floral baths here are tucked beside a jungle river—pure heaven.
Hanging Gardens of Bali – Unreal views. Come for a drink or an iconic infinity pool moment surrounded by endless greenery.
The Yoga Barn – As mentioned earlier. My go-to meal? The Tiger Bowl. Beautiful property with various wellness services.
Tegallalang Rice Terraces – Gorgeous for nature walks and dreamy photos. Book a private tour to explore more.
Zen Hideaway – Home of the viral jungle swing! Yes, it’s worth it for the view and the shot.
Bali Dacha – A hidden Russian spa & sauna experience tucked into the jungle. Think eucalyptus steam, treehouses, and freshwater pools.
Mount Batur Sunrise Hike – A 2am wake-up call for a surreal sunrise above the clouds. Not easy, but unforgettable.
Sacred Monkey Forest – Beautiful ancient architecture, but beware: the monkeys are bold. Seriously—hang onto your stuff!
Rent a motorbike if you’re feeling brave—it’s the best way to explore (with caution!).
Canggu
My favorite town in Bali—a laid-back surf and café haven.
Surfing – Boards + lessons are cheap and easy to find. The vibe is chill and the waves are friendly.
The Lawn – Beachfront bar and restaurant with great music, cocktails, and sunset vibes. Feels like a giant backyard party.
Old Man’s – A local classic. Come for drinks, dancing, and their weekday market scene.
Ruko Café – My favorite vegetarian brunch spot. Do not skip the smoothie bowls!
Shady Shack – Jungle oasis meets clean eats. Vegetarian brunch spot- their ingredients & vibes are super fresh!
Deus Ex Machina – A cool hangout and shop for moto lovers and creatives alike.
Seminyak
The party town of Bali—think beach clubs and bold energy.
Motel Mexicola – Mexican-themed and wildly fun. You end up dancing on the tables here late at night and they very much encourage this behavior (featured in my photos).
Potato Head Beach Club – Splashy pool party meets luxe resort vibes.
Mad Pops – Instagram-worthy fruity paletas.
Revolver Espresso – Obsessed with the coffee, food, staff, and aesthetic. Will not disappoint.
Lots of boutique shopping and restaurants—Seminyak is definitely the most commercial spot.
Uluwatu
Surfer’s paradise with dramatic cliffs and the best sunset views.Uluwatu Temple – Deeply spiritual, with traditional dance performances at sunset.
Sundays Beach Club – Straw-roof beachfront bliss and barefoot luxury.
Bingin Beach – Chill beach vibes, drinks, and beanbags on the sand.
Single Fin – Perched above the cliffs, this is the place to catch the sunset. Bonus: Nalu Bowls nearby!
Gili Islands
A trio of tiny islands off Bali’s coast—each with its own vibe.Gili Trawangan (Gili T) – The party island. If you want nightlife, this is your place.
Gili Meno (Gili M) – A quieter vibe, still social, with a slower pace.
Gili Air – The chillest of all—perfect for couples or peaceful retreats.
Scuba Diving – I got certified here with Manta Dive Gili Air. Amazing team, crystal-clear waters, and a surreal underwater world.
Getting around is easy—just hop a short ferry between the islands.
Nusa Lembongan
Where I ended my trip—and honestly, the perfect note to leave Bali on.
Think: crystal blue waters, tiny beachside hotels, and no cars—only bikes and horse carriages.
A peaceful, secluded island with lush landscapes and amazing diving.
Whew! If you made it this far, you're ready for your Bali adventure. I hope this guide helps you fall in love with the island as much as I did. Soak up the sunshine, connect with the kind-hearted locals, and don’t be afraid to explore your own hidden gems.
See you in Bali ✈️🌴💫
